Selecting the Right Tagging Method in Tag-a-Pic

What are tags?

Tags are like keywords or labels you can add to a photo to make it easier to find later.  Tag-a-Pic uses a face detection and recognition technology to help you add name tags so you can easily search for friends and relatives in your photos.

How do I know what tagging method I should use (and why should I care about this)?

Tag-a-Pic will help you tag photos, but it is not a replacement for a photo organizer, such as Flickr or Picasa. The way each tool searches for photos is different, which is why it's important to configure Tag-a-Pic to create tags that will work for you.

Most photo organizers use a standard format called IPTC, which embeds tags in the image file. If you're using Flickr, Picasa or just folders in Windows Vista, that is the option you need to select. It is also the default Tag-a-Pic setting.

If you're storing your photos in Windows XP folders, or are using tools that do not support the standard, Tag-a-Pic can also append your tags to photo file name. For example, say you have a photo file called IMG_0985.jpg. Using Tag-a-Pic, you added tags for John and Mary to this photo. Tag-a-Pic will automatically rename the file IMG_0985-John-Mary.jpg. Next time you search for John or Mary's photos, you'll be able to search by file names.

How do I change tagging settings?

By default, Tag-a-Pic uses the standard IPTC, which applies to the majority of photo organizers. If you wish to change this setting just run Tag-a-Pic and click the Settings button. Change the tagging option and click OK.
